Google Analytics 4 Enhanced Measurement: Customizing Automatic Event Tracking

Learn how GA4 Enhanced Measurement captures user interactions automatically and discover how to configure settings to prevent tracking errors.

Google Analytics 4 Enhanced Measurement: Automatic Event Tracking

Setting up web analytics historically required writing custom event listeners for basic user interactions (like page scrolling, outbound links clicks, or file downloads). Google Analytics 4 (GA4) simplifies this by introducing Enhanced Measurement, a feature that automatically tracks these events without requiring code changes.

In this guide, we'll explain how Enhanced Measurement works, detail the key events it captures, and outline how to customize settings to avoid tracking errors.

🔍 What is Enhanced Measurement in GA4?

Enhanced Measurement is a suite of automated tracking features enabled by default when you create a GA4 Web Data Stream. It hooks into the global gtag.js script to listen for common user interactions.

Core Events Captured Automatically

Event Name Trigger Condition Captured Parameters
page_view Every time a page loads or the browser history state changes (Single Page Apps). page_location, page_referrer
scroll When a user reaches the bottom (90% vertical depth) of a page. percent_scrolled
click When a user clicks a link leading away from your domain (outbound link). link_classes, link_domain, link_url
view_search_results When a user performs a search on your site (detected via URL query parameters like q or s). search_term
file_download When a user clicks a link to download a file (PDF, ZIP, DOC, PNG, etc.). file_extension, file_name
video_start / video_progress When a user plays or crosses 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% thresholds on embedded YouTube videos. video_title, video_url

🛠️ How to Enable or Refine Enhanced Measurement

While automated tracking is convenient, default configurations can lead to duplicate tracking if you've already set up custom tag events.

To adjust these settings: 1. In GA4, go to Admin > Data collection and modification > Data Streams. 2. Select your Web stream. 3. Under the Enhanced measurement section, toggle the switch to enable it. 4. Click the Gear icon to customize settings: * Site Search: If your tool site uses custom parameters (e.g. ?search_query=), add your parameter key under the additional query parameters field. * Form Interactions: Sometimes triggers false positives on newsletters or login inputs. If you track forms using custom GTM tags, toggle this off to prevent duplicate counts. 5. Click Save.

🚦 Handling SPA History Changes (Single Page Apps)

For applications built with frameworks like Next.js, React, or Vue, pages load dynamically without a full browser reload. Enhanced Measurement tracks these using browser history change events:

  • Ensure Page changes based on browser history events is checked under the Page Views settings.
  • This triggers a page_view event when history.pushState or history.replaceState executes, keeping your dynamic path tracking accurate.
